[Letter] 1865 March 20, Paris, [to] Carolyne de Sayn-Wittgenstein / H.B.

Expresses distress at the state of his poor health, but satisfaction at having received letters from Mme. E[rnst]. Notes that his music is being played in many cities. Mentions Napoleon III's memoirs, then refers to his own Mémoirs, to be published after his death in a limited edition of 1,200 copies, and that the epigraph quotes famous lines from Shakespeare's Macbeth (in English): "Life's but a walking shadow ..." Concludes with remarks on a newspaper article concerning the discovery of ancient animal bones near the Mississippi River, noting that all are extinct except for the rhinoceros.
